Ankara is the center of Anatolia. Hittite name for the city is Akuwash. It was was established over 3000 years ago at the intersection of two trade routes. The Phrygians moved in after the decline of the Hittite empire and then Alexander the Great arrived. The importance of the city declined throughout the Ottoman period - by the 19th century.
It became an important center again when Kemal Ataturk chose it as the base from which to direct the War of Liberation. Because of its role in the war and its strategic position, it was declared as the capital of the new Turkish Republic in 1923.
Ankara was designed to be a modern capital city. There are many interesting museums and sites to visit in Ankara. A lot of foreigners are here on business but tourism is beginning to have an impact on various aspects of the city. Ankara is a reasonably convenient place to base yourself if you want to travel Anatolia, Cappadocia or the Black Sea coast and a growing number of tour operators and related service industries are catering to tourists.
You should see Anit Kabir when you go to Ankara. It is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (the leader of Turkish War Idependence and the founder and the first president of the Republic of Turkey. Also, Museum of Anatolian Civilisation, Museum of Ethnography, Old Turkish House Museum, Railway Museum, Old Locomotive Museum, Republic Museum, War of Salvation Museum, Museum of Painting and Sculpture and Presidential Mansion are some interesting touristic places in Ankara.
